Bespoke book production: from concept to object
This limited edition bespoke book brings together 128 original artworks exploring the history of Bitcoin, forming a chronological visual narrative from early theory to global phenomenon. Designed as a collector’s object rather than a conventional publication, the project sits within a broader practice of bespoke book production – where concept, materials and construction are developed in parallel to create something entirely unique.
This post offers a snapshot of the finished project. For a deeper look inside the book and box making process – from early concepts through to the challenges and material decisions behind the final object – read our insight: ‘Limited Edition Book Production: Behind the Scenes‘.
A global limited-edition art book project
As the project developed, the content evolved into a visual narrative within a luxury coffee table book design, bringing together 128 original artworks from world-leading artists. Each artwork responds to a defining cultural, technical, or social moment, presented in chronological order. Specialist collaborators were engaged for their understanding of crypto culture, supporting the translation of complex ideas into visual form without losing the diversity of each contributing artist. Together, the artworks form a visual story of Bitcoin as it moved from theory to global phenomenon.
Designing the physical concept of a limited-edition art book
Our role focused on developing the physical concept of the limited-edition art book – exploring design, format, scale, materials, and how the story could be expressed through construction and materiality, not just content. This thinking extended beyond the book itself, with the First Edition conceived as an art object rather than a traditional coffee table book.
First Edition presentation box design
We conceived and fabricated a handcrafted presentation box for the First Edition in collaboration with a fine furniture maker. The box features a mechanised opening system, activated by a discreet button that triggers simultaneously sliding doors, opening with a smooth, controlled motion to reveal the book within.
The box is crafted from 5,000-year-old black oak – the nation’s rarest and most precious hardwood. Formed over millennia and available only in finite quantities, the material was chosen not only for its depth and beauty but for what it represents: a quiet parallel to the intent of the limited edition art book itself – a digital monetary system defined by permanence and scarcity.
The wood is finished with a high-gloss polish reminiscent of a concert piano, with smooth black stone inlays set into the lid. A circular aperture in the box lid creates a deliberate moment of reveal, framing a platinum coin embedded in the book cover beneath.
Book construction and materials in bespoke book production
The book itself is bound in premium bull leather, a nod to the language of global finance and the concept of a bull market, synonymous with growth, confidence, and investor optimism.
It is constructed using a bespoke lay-flat binding system, adapted specifically to support the exceptional thickness of the book. Standard casing methods would have placed excessive stress on a volume of this depth, so we re-engineered the construction to maintain a true lay-flat opening while protecting the long-term integrity of the book. This format is fundamental to the experience of the work, reinforcing its status as an art object rather than a conventional publication.
Internally, multiple paper stocks and specialist print finishes are used throughout, selected on an artwork-by-artwork basis. These variations add rhythm, tactility, and visual contrast, reinforcing the book’s status as a bespoke art publication.
Bespoke book production for collectors and brands
This project exemplifies our approach to limited-edition art books, delivered through an unusually collaborative model bringing together artists, designers, craftspeople and specialist makers working across continents. Our role centred on shaping how the publication exists in the world – translating a complex brief into a physical artifact that could not have been realised through standard publishing methods.
We work with brands, collectors and private clients to design and produce bespoke books that go beyond standard publishing – from concept development through to materials, prototyping and final production.
Each project is approached as a physical object, not just a standard book, with every detail considered to ensure the final piece feels resolved, intentional and enduring.
